Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company Limited (NAWASSCO) has embraced modern technology by being the first company to launch mobile meter reading in the water sector.

The Launch held on 1st August 2013 was attended by: Mr. Bartonjo Chesaina; Chairman Rift Valley Water Services Board (RVWSB), Eng. Japheth Mutai; CEO of RVWSB, Ms. Joyce Oduor; Ag. Chairlady NAWASSCO board, Eng. John Cheruiyot; Managing Director of NAWASSCO, NAWASSCO staff members and other stakeholders in the water sector.

On a normal meter reading day, meter readers carry meter reading sheets to record the meter readings which are later keyed into a computer for billing. With the new technology, meter readers are equipped with an android mobile phone containing the meter reading software. This will allow the meter readers to send the readings online for billing. The Mobile meter reading will enable meter readers to reduce errors and complaints. It will also enhance environmental management by reducing the use of paper. The mobile phones are also GPS enabled to detect the exact location of the meter readings and reduce any intended fraud.

During the launch, the speakers were excited about the new technology. Eng. Mutai; CEO RVWSB said that NAWASSCO was setting milestones in water provision in Kenya. Eng. Cheruiyot, NAWASSCO’s MD indicated that the new technology stemmed from one of NAWASSCO’s core values of innovation and creativity. He said, “tunatoka analogue tunaenda digital” – “we are now moving away from analogue and embracing the digital world. His words were reiterated by Mr. Bartonjo who officially launched the new technology, he said “the mobile meter reading echoes the words in NAWASSCO’s prayer-upholding the core values especially innovation and creativity”.

Ms. Joyce Oduor; AG Chairlady NAWASSCO noted that mobile meter reading was the beginning of great things- “tunaenda mbele”- we are moving forward. According to Mr. Andrew Ambani, NAWASSCO’s Systems Administrator, the mobile meter reading like any other technology will continue to be improved to enhance and strengthen the system.
